Meet Shawn

A Story of Hope and Inspiration

Shawn Bassam, born on 11/11/11, entered the world on a unique date. At the age of 2, he received a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). For years, Shawn's world was largely silent. He lacked the ability to express himself verbally, leaving him feeling isolated and misunderstood.

School was a particularly challenging experience for Shawn. From kindergarten through 4th grade, the rigid structure and traditional classroom environment caused him immense distress. Despite his non-verbal state, in 4th grade, Shawn found a way to communicate with his teacher, Mrs. Sheinberg. Without words, he conveyed that while he was okay with attending school, the confines of the classroom were overwhelming.

For months, Mrs. Sheinberg witnessed Shawn's struggle. Recognizing his need for a safe space, she began allowing him to spend time outside the classroom. This is when Shawn discovered his haven – a blue bench located in front of his classroom.

This simple blue bench became Shawn's sanctuary. It was a place where he could find solace, process his experiences, and simply be himself. Now in 6th grade, Shawn has found his voice. Since the 4th grade, he has made the blue bench his regular spot, a symbol of his newfound comfort in the school environment.

Shawn's story is one of courage, determination, and the unwavering human spirit. His struggle to communicate and find an environment conducive to learning sparked a fire within the Bassam family. Inspired by Shawn's resilience, they established Shawn's Blue Bench, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Shawn's Blue Bench is dedicated to empowering children with ASD, like Shawn, to find their voice. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in an open and supportive environment. Through Shawn's story, we hope to inspire others to embrace neurodiversity and create a world where all children can reach their full potential.
